TThis lyrical jazz arrangement of Horace Silver’s “Song for My Father” brings the warmth and groove of the original recording into an expressive brass chamber setting.
Scored for two flugelhorns (or trumpets), horn, trombone, and tuba, the arrangement features a prominent written tuba solo in the style of a jazz bass improvisation, supported by rhythmic ensemble chord hits. Later in the piece, Flugelhorn 1 is also featured with short improvised-style passages as the main theme returns.
Written at an advanced-intermediate level, the primary challenges involve style, groove, and ensemble balance rather than extreme range or endurance. All parts remain in comfortable registers, making the piece accessible for strong high school groups while remaining ideal for college and professional brass quintets.
